The COP28 Presidency has launched the Energy Transition Changemakers (ETC) initiative to foster collaboration and share knowledge amongst the private sector in implementing innovative and scalable decarbonization projects around the world.

Technology and business model innovation is a critical enabler of climate action and private sector innovation will be essential to developing the solutions to the climate crisis. As a part of the COP28 Action Agenda to fast track a just and orderly energy transition and take an inclusive approach to climate action, the Energy Transition Changemakers initiative will encourage private companies to bring their practical solutions to the energy transition to COP28.

Companies of any size worldwide are welcome to apply, and projects of all types aligning with the eligibility criteria will be considered for recognition. Companies applying must be an equity holder in the submitted project.

From small community solar projects to large-scale low-carbon hydrogen production, the COP28 Presidency is looking for game-changing solutions that can be broadened out to advance the just energy transition and benefit society. The energy transition requires solutions that can decarbonize the global economy in a practical and scalable way in all parts of the world, and COP28 will provide leading project owners an opportunity to share their expertise.

COP28 Chief Executive Officer, Adnan Amin said, “The energy transition is one of humanity’s greatest challenges and will require the best of our skills and collaboration. Keeping 1.5C within reach requires innovation and partnerships across all sectors. Private sector innovation will be essential to developing the technology we need to confront the climate crisis. Our intention is for the Energy Transition Changemakers to demonstrate and share solutions and best practice that enable and accelerate a just and orderly energy transition. It is vital that industry leaders now step forward to offer their innovative solutions to the climate crisis.”

Applications will be accepted across four industry categories:

  1. Renewables, Renewables Integration, and Clean power
  2. Energy Efficiency
  3. Low-Carbon Hydrogen
  4. Heavy Emitting Sectors

Applications are now available on the COP28 website and are being accepted immediately.

The deadline for entries is Oct. 9, 2023. There is no cost to apply.

Following an application and selection process, the most promising projects will be chosen as Energy Transition Changemakers and will have the opportunity to present their work to an audience and expert panel during COP28. Presentations will occur in the Green Zone in Expo City, Dubai, on 5 December. This will be in conjunction with COP28’s thematic day covering energy and industry, and a just transition.

The Energy Transition Changemakers initiative is part of the COP28 Presidency’s Action Agenda which is based on four key pillars. These pillars include fast-tracking a just and orderly energy transition, fixing climate finance, focusing on people, lives, and livelihoods, and underpinning everything with full inclusivity.
